Won’t this just encourage my dog to pull when on the lead?
Your dog will soon learn the difference between being in harness and being walked on a collar and lead. Just as working dogs (guide dogs, police dogs) know the difference between their work equipment and leisure time.
Use a command such as “pull” or “mush” when you want the dog to pull his tyre. Once your dog has had a good work-out he will be more responsive to any training you wish to do.
My dogs know that when they are wearing the harness they are encouraged to pull. When back on a collar and lead they know they must walk by my side.
Be sure to use an ordinary or head collar for your walks and NOT a body harness. The dog needs to know the difference between the two activities.
What happens if some of the materials break or wear out?
The harness is tested for brisk exercise over a variety of terrains and should last many years. Recycled tyres should last a long time before replacement and are easily available. Any faulty goods will be replaced. You can purchase replacement parts if necessary.
What tyre should I get and how much weight can my dog pull?
Select the weight of the tyre to suit the size of your dog and their level of stamina. A 145/13 used tyre weighs approximately 5.5kg.As a rough guide, dogs between 18kgs and 36kgs can pull 4.5kgs easily . Smaller dogs should start at 1kg to 2kgs. My Dobermann weighs 25kgs and can pull 7kgs on tarmac with moderate ease.It all depends on the breed, weight and stamina of the dog. It is better to start with a lighter tyre and weights and increase if necessary.
Don't forget that the pulling power will vary depending on the surface. Grass is easier than tarmac which is easier than sand or snow. Vary the weights according to where you are.
Can I run two dogs together on the Drag-Hound?
Yes. You will of course need two harnesses but both dogs can be hitched to one tyre with two tow lines. It is best if the dogs are roughly matched in pulling power. For safety reasons keep the dogs on a lead/long line when hitched to the tyre.
Can my puppy use a Drag-Hound?
No. Dogs under a year are still developing and pulling weights could be detremental to their health. This is the same as for dogs participating in agility sports.
